India’s Sawan Barwal clinched the silver medal in men’s marathon at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 in Japan on Saturday.
Barwal finished second behind Japan’s Ichitaka Yamashita (2:10:49) with a new National Record of 2 hours 11 minutes 37 seconds, becoming only the fourth Indian man in history to win an Asian Games medal in this discipline after Chhota Singh (Gold, 1951 New Delhi), Surat Mathur (Bronze, 1951 New Delhi) and H K Seetharam (Bronze, 1982 New Delhi).
Barwal improved his own National record from April this year by 21 seconds.
Kartik Karkera (2:22:41), the other Indian in the 19-man field, finished 17th.
At the ongoing edition of the Asian Games, India has won 24 medals – two gold, 10 silver and 12 bronze.
