Jagsher Singh Khangurra secured India’s first and only medal at this year’s BWF Junior World Championships. He reached the semi-finals, which will be played on Friday against Indonesia’s Radithya Bayu Wardhana.
Khangurra played both the round of 16 and quarterfinal matches on Thursday, beating Malaysia’s Lee Qian Chong 15-9, 15-8 and Yuan-Syue Jhuang of Chinese Taipei 6-15, 17-15, 15-12, respectively.
He reacted to the victory by saying, “Words can’t express the feeling. Winning a medal for India is really awesome.”
“I’ve been dreaming of playing in the World Junior Championships for the last five to six years. Now that I have secured a medal, I am hoping for gold,” said Khangurra.

He says that practising for around six hours a day has honed his stroke placements, but he still wants to work on his power shots.
On his match, “His (Jhuang) smashes are really good. He outplayed me in the first set, but in the second set I motivated myself by saying, ‘I have to play for India and for my parents’,” said the 15-year-old.
He trains in the same academy as Lakshya Sen and learns shuttle placements by watching him.
