Parveen Hooda advanced to the women’s 65kg final of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, beating China’s Li Shu 5-0 in the semifinal at Nishio Gymnasium on Tuesday. Both boxers had already been assured of at least a bronze medal, but the Indian’s win upgrades her podium finish to a guaranteed silver.
The 26-year-old had earlier beaten Uzbekistan’s Navbakhor Khamidova 5-0 in the quarterfinal, controlling the bout with her reach and counter-attacks. Li Shu, who edged Kazakhstan’s Aida Abikeyeva in the last eight, could not solve that puzzle.
The run is a redemptive one for Parveen, who was stripped of her 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games bronze after a whereabouts failure. She now fights for gold.
She is one of six Indian boxing semifinalists in Nagoya, already surpassing the four-medal haul from Hangzhou.
