Former Rangers player Kyle Hutton to stand trial over road death
Hutton faces a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, and other charges of failing to co-operate with breath and drug tests and not providing two specimens of breath to determine his “ability to drive”.
There is an alternative allegation that the fatality was as a result of Hutton – who played for the Ibrox club between 2010 and 2015 – being careless behind the wheel.
Prosecutors state Hutton failed to carry out “proper observations” and did not detect Cairns standing on the road.
It is alleged he then struck the woman, causing her to fall to the ground and that she was so badly hurt she died in hospital four days later.
During a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow Graeme Brown KC, defending, pleaded not guilty on Hutton’s behalf.
The solicitor advocate added there was potentially upsetting footage which jurors may be shown as part of the evidence.
He also said Hutton’s wife was likely to be called as a defence witness.
Lord Scott went on to set a trial, which could last about four days, for 7 February 2028.
Hutton, whose other clubs included St Mirren, Dumbarton and Partick Thistle, remains on bail meantime.
